Beer & Wine Brewing
Home Newbies Corner

Welcome to our Brew Room

My newfound hobby is a joy. Building a handcrafted batch of excellent wine or beer is very rewarding. My first question to my Brewmister (Jeff Cox) was "can I make beer and wine that is as good as store-bought?"  He said, "no, what we make is far better". He was right.

I'm finally getting this section of my website going. I want to keep interesting things posted here. I'm just getting started on it so be patient and keep checking back.

I had one batch of White Burgundy go cloudy on me. I was going to toss it, but decided to read a little about cloudy wine. Seems metal shock can cause it sometimes, but since no metal ever touches my wine, I knew that was not it. I also read where tannins in the grapes could cause it.

The cure??  Egg shells.  Yep, break three eggs, rinse the shells, carefully remove the membrane from the shell, bake in a 200 degree oven to dry the shells, crush them up, and drop them into the cloudy wine. They will float up, then sink, many times as they remove the cloudiness.

This is the 6 gallons that a couple of weeks ago which you couldn't see through at all, after I racked the wine off the egg shells. I placed a camera lens behind the 6 gallon jug on the first photo, then decided a page of old wine labels may be better to see the clarity.

COUNTER-FLOW WORT CHILLER

I made my own counter-flow wort chiller from instructions from Brew Your Own Magazine. Instructions were to use JB Weld, but I like to solder with silver solder. I also made mine to join a complete garden hose instead of cutting and using water hose clamps.

Here is how I laid it out before sweating the joints->
